CIS 313 Telecommunications And Computer Networks
“This course provides an overview of telecommunications and computer networks. Course work includes the study of signals and bandwidth concepts, spectra, basics of electronics, information and coding, modulation, multiplexing, transmission systems, transmission media, analog versus digital communications, computer networks, and switching techniques”
Reflection
The goals of this course were to teach us about telecommunications and computer networks. By the end of the course we were to create our own network diagram discussing a LAN (local area network) and WAN (wide area network), routers, Ethernet switches, hubs, cable modems, servers, protocols, OSI layers, UTP, fiber optic wiring, VPN (virtual private networks) and TCP/IP just to name few.
Welcome to my first class in the MMI program!
To say I was extremely intimidated is an understatement. Fortunately, I had a great professor (Ken Woo) who was helpful and encouraging and helped me along the way. As the course progressed, I realized to my own surprise that I was already familiar with a lot of the terminology taught in class, but just didn’t have the comprehension of how it all worked together.
As I mentioned earlier, one of the first roles I had when joining Allscripts was as an implementation specialist. I worked very closely with IT support to assist me with implementing our EHR at client locations. This included testing network connections, checking to make sure the “green light” was flashing on the router and whatever else I was instructed to do to ensure the network was running properly. Although this was years ago, the benefits of my exposure to working closely with IT, help prepare me for taking this course. Maybe I was a little more techy that I thought?
The network diagram project for this class helped solidify my understanding of what a network is and the importance of all its components. I do admit I’m still no expert but I was able to grasp the concept and apply it to my work today. It has been very useful when having conversations with clients looking to implement our EHR such that I can now speak intelligently (at a very high level I might add) about their network infrastructure. Goal accomplished!
