MED INF 401 American Health Care System
“This course covers the components of the U.S. health care system, including the federal government's role in health care, health industry management, cost and quality issues, managed care, reimbursement mechanisms, legal and regulatory issues, profit vs. nonprofit care, the role of technology and technology assessment, and compares the United States with international health care systems” Reflection Although I wasn’t required to take this course, I chose to in order to broaden my knowledge of the healthcare IT industry and bring some value to my current role and I’m glad I did. I learned more than I thought I would as it relates to the US health care system. I wasn’t’ aware at that time of how involved the government is in healthcare and the role they play in making decision surrounding patient care. I realized that I was too siloes in my role as a solutions specialist and needed to step outside of my comfort zone and engage in more healthcare issues besides the implementation of an EHR. Today, with meaningful use, pay for performance, reporting matrixes on quality of care, more and more providers feel the struggle to try to keep up with all the government policies and requirements in the care of their patient. Between the federal government’s roles, insurance reimbursements and the role of technology in the physician practice. As a future medical informaticist, I asked myself how can I help? It is my plan and hopes that with my MMI degree that I can help somehow make the process of practicing medicine less daunting. Source: MMI Program
