MED INF 407 Legal, Ethical, and Social Issues
"This course addresses the legal, ethical, and social issues in health care informatics and will equip students with the knowledge and analytic tools needed to spot those key issues, thereby better protecting students and their employers in the medical informatics field. The health care industry is highly regulated, and this course also covers regulatory informatics requirements as they apply to work with health care data and information management systems. The course also covers topics such as privacy and security, fraud and abuse, confidentiality, antitrust law, intellectual property, the Joint Commission, disclosure, and compliance programs" Reflection My knowledge of legal, ethical and social issues as it related to my work at a healthcare IT company was limited but I knew it was important that I understand it. This course opened my eyes, wide. As I learned about the true meaning of HIPAA, confidentiality, and protected health information (PHI) and how to handle it, I found myself getting a bit nervous and began replaying the moments where I had inadvertently been given access to PHI, from clients and prospects. The purpose was to give me sample notes and documentation for the purposes of providing them with a demonstration of our EHR. This had occurred mostly early in my career prior to the harsh and serious consequences that we know of today in the event of a breach of confidentiality and privacy. Today, when I have a need for a sample note or documentation, I am always sure to ask for the PHI to be de-identified or I won’t accept it. Many times I have conversations with clients who are rightfully concerned about the security and privacy aspects of our software program. The concerns are legitimate and should be asked. The research paper and case studies that we did in class were a great way to learn and understand the challenges of privacy, confidentiality and security. I realize now that I have a responsibility to protect patient information and to protect the client as well. Source: MMI Program
