MED INF 409 Biostatistics
"This course is designed for the biomedical researcher. Topics include descriptive statistics, hypothesis testing, estimation, t-tests, chi-squared tests, analysis of variance, linear regression, correlation, nonparametric tests, survival analysis, and odds ratio. Biomedical applications are discussed for each topic as well as overall application of statistical methods in the informatics field" Reflection I’ll be honest and say that I didn’t understand the purpose of the Biostatistics course as it relates to healthcare technology and the MMI program. However, after going through the course and writing a research paper on published research and discussing research based approaches, I realized how crucial biostatistics is in medical research and medical informatics. I chose to write my research paper on the studies and success rates of In-Vitro Fertilization (IVF) in the United States, in particular the state of Illinois. The research focused on the success rate of live births based on age groups of women. After writing my research paper, I had a better appreciation of understanding the work involved in healthcare and statistical data its direct effect on patient care. I know now that there is more involved in patient care. Understanding how to apply and use the research data and statistical data help improves and prevent medical conditions. Contrary to research data, I also learned that you can’t always believe what you read about statistics and research. The book “Freakonomics” (which is now one of my favorite reads) was an excellent read that uncovered how some statistical data can be skewed based on the population and samples derived from the population. How true are the numbers? I highly recommend reading the book or watching the documentary. It will certainly raise awareness of information presented and how it is presented. Finally, although I haven’t used statistical data in my current role, I have been able to refer to what I’ve learned in class when engaging with clinicians and staff and the use of statistics in healthcare and occasionally referring to the “Freakonomoics” book as a point of discussion.
