MED INF 403 Introduction to Medical Informatics
“This course is a survey of fundamental concepts and activities on information technology as applied to health care. Topics include computer-based medical records, knowledge-bases systems, telehealth, decision theory and decision support, human-computer interfaces, systems integration, the digital library, and educational applications. Department-specific applications such as pathology, radiology, psychiatry, and intensive care are also discussed” Reflection This is the first core course in the MMI program. I was excited to finally be here! I felt very comfortable with the material presented since it is a direct correlation to my work. The goals of the course were to understand medical informatics, medical decision making, decision support, integration, privacy, ethics and compliance and medical record systems. These are topics that I discuss with our clients on a daily basis as it relates to implementing our EHR system and other relevant items. The group projects were tough assignments but were necessary to further enhance my knowledge of healthcare while also teaching me new and relevant topics. In particular, my team focused on the challenges of medication reconciliation and a separate project on service oriented architecture (SOA) which I wasn’t familiar with prior to class. Our different backgrounds played well as we did research on topics on the future of medical informatics. We were able to knowledge share and I felt I had a great team for this group project. I thought this was a great first course as an introduction into the program and looked forward to the upcoming courses. Source: MMI Program
