CIS 317 Introduction to Database Systems Design & Implementation
“This course covers the fundamentals of database design and management. Topics include the principles and methodologies of database design, database application development, normalization, referential integrity, security, relational database models, and database languages. Principles are applied by performing written assignments and a project using an SQL database system” Reflection This course pushed me beyond what I thought were my limitations. Designing my own database and using Microsoft Access (for the first time) showed me that I was capable. The goals of the course were to expose and teach us how to design and implement a database and understand the different database languages and the importance of normalization to reduce redundancy and dependency for a relational database. I struggled quite a bit with the individual project and felt that I could use another class in database design. Although I had a better understanding of the terminology, I still felt challenged in putting it all together in a design. In retrospect, my experience as a corporate trainer gave me the opportunity to work again directly with IT support and had already given me a basic foundation of what I was about to embark on years later in this course. I was in charge of training employees and clients who required training at our office locations. This meant I had my own database that I was responsible for managing, backing up, and setting up security (all with the help of IT).That experience prepared me for this course. After having gone through telecommunication networks, I felt a little more comfortable in technology discussions outside of class and in the workplace. Today, part of my role as a solutions specialist is to work closely with sales reps during the sales cycle and because of this I have the opportunity to learn and apply what I’ve learned in this class when discussing database setup with clients and I can help them understand to a degree what databases design means at a high level.
